Reunion Tuesdays continues.  This Tuesday we'll reprise Mike Costley's Art Gallery performance, but in a far more intimate setting.  I'd advise an early arrival if you want to get a table or a seat at the bar.  This will be another of those memorable nights.  Milkie's on Elmwood, at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881 I'd advise an early arrival if you want to get a table or a seat at the bar.  This will be another of those memorable nights.  Milkie's on Elmwood, at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

The Western New York Jazz Orchestra has the distinction of closing out year 32 of the longest running free concert series in the country.  It is simply an honor to play these concerts and to be associated with all of the good people who make it happen:  Stan Lipsey, Don Metz, the long list of esteemed musicians, the sound crew, and a grateful audience.  And somehow, year after year, the weather has been with us.  The Karma is good for a reason...

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 44

Sunday, 7/21 at Old Falls Street USA     2:00 - 5:00
Bobby Jones, piano     Peter Chwazik, bass     dh, drum set
The Niagara Fine Arts Program (fantastic that there is such an organization) calls this concert series Jazzy Sundays, to distinguish it from their Friday concerts featuring music of other genres.  The stage is located in the middle block on Old Falls Street directly across from the new NCCC Culinary Arts Center.  This performance will be a first for me, in that I have the distinct honor of accompanying Bobby Jones and Peter Chwazik together!  Yikes!  World class on keys and world class on bass!

Tuesday, 7/23 at Milkie's Elmwood
Gary Keller, saxophone

Jay Bianchi, piano
     7:00 - 10:00
Gary Keller, saxophone     Jay Bianchi, piano     Cameron Kayne, bass    your host, drum set
Maybe we should call our Milkie's gig "Reunion Tuesdays".  If you were there last week, you know of what I speak.  Larry Covelli, Craig Kastelnik, & Patty Flaherty all on the same band. Don Menza, Louie Marino, Mike Costley, and Russ D'Alba all sitting-in.  Sam Noto, Phil DiRe, Chuck Buffamonte, and Ray Chamberlain all in the house.  It was one of the most inspiring evenings of music and friendships in the 15 years of our Tuesday jazz experiment.  And I dare predict that this week will be no different.  For starters, our reunion theme continues.  Saxophonist Gary Keller returns home for a brief visit while on a summer break from his teaching responsibilities at the University of Miami, while pianist Jay Bianchi gets a break from his teaching duties at the New School.  And the new bassist for the Airmen of Note completes the reunion theme.  This is not only going to be a reunion.  This is going to be a celebration.  Cameron Kayne is one of the most accomplished and impressive young men whose growth I have ever had the pleasure to witness.  From sitting-in at Bobby McGee's while still in high school to his selection as the new bassist for the most renown service band in the country?  I feel honored to have a personal perspective.  Congratulations to Cameron, and to Dave and Shelly Kayne.  Hard work, consistency, decency, attitude, and unselfish parenting have produced a young man who will now represent his Buffalo roots in performances at The White House and around the world.  And how does Cameron complete the reunion theme this week?  Cameron's grandfather was another Buffalo legend - pianist and teacher Danny Kayne.  And who were Danny's bassist and drummer upon reaching a certain age and skill level?  Jay Bianchi & Danny's son, Dave.  Mike Costley last week proudly informed the crowd at Milkie's that they were hearing Buffalo Royalty.  This week, the theme continues.  Please join us.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Wednesday, 7/24 at Hennepin Gazebo, Lewiston     7:00 - 9:00
Thursday, 7/25 at Russell Park in Akron     12:00 - 1:00
The Upstate Express
Ronnie Corsaro - piano & arrangements     Tim Clarke - trumpet     Ricky Fleming - trombone     Russ D'Alba & Kenny Kuriscak - saxophones     Wayne Moose - bass     yours truly - drum set
Ronnie's summer tradition continues both in its Lewiston home and on the road.  Both are fantastic venues for summer music.  If your schedule allows for a drive to Akron and a matinee performance, you also have the irresistible option of sampling the cuisine at Guy's Subs, located on the very boundary of Russell Park.  Heaven.

Thursday, 7/25 at Ellery Park Pavilion, Jamestown     6:30 - 8:30
Vocalist & Songwriter Barbara Jean
Pete Pepke, trombone     Dalt Berringer, piano     Lloyd Howard, bass     your correspondent, drum set
An invitation for my southern tier family, or for friends at Chautauqua Lake...

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 43

Hello friends.  Setting the record for the latest invitation ever...

Tuesday, 7/16 at Milkie's Elmwood
Larry Covelli, tenor saxophone
7:00 - 10:00
Patty Flaherty, vocals     Craig Kastelnik, Hammond B-3
Larry Covelli, tenor saxophone     Patty Flaherty, vocals     Craig Kastelnik, Hammond B-3    Ralph Fava, guitar     your host, drum set
Can I quote my father here?  Considering the above referenced personnel, if you don't make this hit tonight, "you need your head examined".  My dad would say that.  "Brainless"  was another one, whether it be a reference to one of my many human failings, or that of a fellow driver.  But really - Larry Covelli with Patty Flaherty & Craig Kastelnik, all in town this week only?  Sometimes the stars do align.  Join us in air conditioned comfort.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Wednesday, 7/17 at Hennepin Gazebo, Lewiston
The Upstate Express
 7:00 - 9:00
The Upstate Express
Ronnie Corsaro - piano & arrangements     Tim Clarke - trumpet     Ricky Fleming - trombone     Russ D'Alba & Kenny Kuriscak - saxophones     Wayne Moose - bass     yours truly - drum set
Rained out last week, but there's no sign of the evil precip this week...  Ronnie's summer tradition begins in earnest.  Skillfully orchestrated arrangements, inventive soloists, and music you can tap a toe to.  A free concert series thanks to Ronnie's connections with the moneyed politicos...  Please join us.

Thursday, 7/18 at Russell Park in Akron
Laurie Bordonaro, vocals
    12:00 - 1:00

Laurie Bordonaro, vocals     George Kane, guitar     Wayne Moose, bass     your correspondent, drum set
Laurie is fearless isn't she?  It's now time to try something completely different.  There is no breathing guitarist that is more sensitive than George Thomas Kane.  And Wayne Moose is not only an accomplished bassist, but he does a mean impersonation of Opie Taylor.   As an added bonus, the legendary Guy's Subs is strategically located on the very boundary of Russell Park.  If you've made the trip to Mayberry, & you haven't stopped at Guy's, you've wasted a trip.

Friday, 7/19 at Wegman's Niagara Falls Blvd
The Dave Scott Trio
  5:00 - 7:00
The Dave Scott Trio
Dave Scott keeps it real.  He welcomes the challenge of leading a guitar trio.  Think about that.  No one else is comping for you, and the only other soloists are your bassist and your drummer (God help you...)  And further, Dave never looks at a lead sheet to get him get through a tune.  That's impressive.  OK, it's easy for me to wax philosophic.  I don't have to negotiate chord changes.  But I've worked with world class musicians who need that music stand.  Not Dave.  He plays without a net.  And that is musicianship.

Sunday, 7/21 at Old Falls Street USA
Bobby Jones, piano
:00 - 5:002
Bobby Jones, piano     Jerry Livingston, bass     dh, drum set
On Old Falls Street directly across from the new NCCC Culinary Arts Center.

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 42

Hello friends.  This week and next...

Today, 7/7 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery     2:00 - 4:30
Cindy Miller, vocals     Lisa Hasselback, piano     Wayne Moose, bass     your correspondent, drum set
As of 11:45 this morning, we're still on.  Skies will be overcast, but rain has been removed from the forecast until later tonight.  You've heard Cindy at all three of our Tuesday venues, but the larger Art Gallery audience will now hear just how extraordinary she is.  Thanks to the generosity of Stan Lipsey and the efforts of contractor Don Metz, we likely hold claim to the longest running free jazz series in the country, if not the world over.  I have a tiny bit of inside information that I'll risk sharing, at the expense of publicizing a confidence: The Buffalo News has not been the sole sponsor of this long-running, free concert series.  Stan Lipsey himself has contributed a significant amount of his own money over these last thirty-plus years in order to offer this outstanding cultural event to his community.  And as to his contribution, the jazz series is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg.  His leadership and generosity were essential to the restoration of the Frank Lloyd Martin House restoration.  Thank you Stan, for your vision, your leadership, and your philanthropy.  Enjoy your well-earned retirement, and know that your community is indebted to you for your benefaction and your tireless energy.

Tuesday, 7/9 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Wednesday, 7/10 at Hennepin Gazebo, Lewiston     7:00 - 9:00
The Upstate Express
Ronnie Corsaro - piano & arrangements     Tim Clarke - trumpet     John Hasselback, Jr - trombone     Russ D'Alba & Kenny Kuriscak - saxophones     Wayne Moose - bass     your host - drum set
Ronnie's summer concert series begins at Milkie's this week and then goes for six consecutive Wednesdays at the gazebo in Lewiston.  If you're not inclined to transit the Grand Island bridges, then a visit to Milkie's Elmwood this Tuesday is your only recourse.  And really, with few exceptions, where can you hear a septet such as this one?  Skillfully orchestrated arrangements, inventive soloists, and music you can tap a toe to: The Upstate Express...  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

next Sunday, 7/14 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery     2:00 - 4:30
Mike Costley, vocals     Bobby Militello, saxophone & flute     Bobby Jones, piano     Chuck Buffamonte, guitar     Bill Staebell, bass     dh, drum set
A Buffalo success story comes home.  Now an established artist in LA and Palm Springs, Mike's formative years took place on the varied and sundry stages of our Niagara Frontier.  There was a time when musicians and singers could make a living in Buffalo.  Mike Costley, Anne Fadale, Dick Fadale, Bobby Jones, Bobby Militello, Patty Flaherty, and a host of others owned this town in the 70's.  But since finding opportunity and a wider audience in Los Angeles, Mike has gone on to appear with the likes of Tony Bennett, Keely Smith, Jerry Vale, Glen Campbell, Vic Damone, and Jack Jones.  The feelings will most certainly run deep next Sunday when Mike reconvenes with long-time friends Militello and Jones, and performs again for his original home town audience.

next Tuesday, 7/16 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Larry Covelli, tenor saxophone     Patty Flaherty, vocals     Craig Kastelnik, Hammond B-3     Chuck Buffamonte, guitar     your host, drum set

Upcoming at Milkie's Elmwood
Tuesday, 7/23 Jay Bianchi & Gary Keller
Tuesday, 7/30 Mike Costley
Tuesday, 8/6 Mike Kaupa
Tuesday, 8/13 Kenny Kuriscak & Tim Clarke
Tuesday, 8/27 trioPAYAZZO plus 2

Do you think they're cutting the Instrumental Music programs in Holland?

To persevere...
I think I just put one foot in front of the other and wasn't discouraged by setbacks.  There are an awful lot of great musicians out there.  It's about hanging in there, working hard, and being ready for a break when and if it occurs.  That's really all you can do.  Work hard and hope you get lucky.

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 41

Hello friends.  Here's this week's invitation.

Tuesday, 7/2 at Milkie's Elmwood
Vince Ercolomento, tenor saxophone
   7:00 - 10:00
Vince Ercolomento, tenor saxophone     Joe Chiappone, guitar     Peter Chwazik, bass     your host, drum set
I need your help with this if you can make it.  Here's the deal: If we have a full house, Mike Milkie doesn't care what planet the musicians are from.  But when I bring in cats from out of town, and we don't draw, I hear about it.  Since this gig's inception, my simple philosophy has been to present accomplished musicians playing creative, indigenous music.  Build it, and they will come.  But I'm not responsible for paying the bills at Milkie's Elmwood.  The curious dynamic here is directly related to human nature.  When we book a local favorite, we get an audience.  Simple.  But if our guest artists don't have a local following because, well, they're not local, we need our faithful to have our back.  Of the three names above, you probably know who Vince Ercolomento is.  If you're a tenor player, you definitely do, because you have high regard for your esteemed colleague.  Vince is an old school powerhouse - think Hank Mobley or George Coleman (who Vince studied with by the way).  His sound and his fearless improvisations are the stuff of legend in his native Rochester.  Ithaca's Peter Chwazik has done our gig before, but way back at our curiously lit Main Street location.  And Joe Chiappone I'll meet for the first time this Tuesday.  True, there's comfort in the familiar.  But there's inspiration in that which is new.  We do hope you'll join us.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Sunday, 7/7 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery
   2:00 - 4:30
Cindy Miller, vocals     Lisa Hasselback, piano     Wayne Moose, bass     your correspondent, drum set
I just checked.  The forecast for next Sunday calls for a 20% chance of precipitation, and a 100% guarantee of inspired vocals from a diminutive, hard-swinging singer. I have a tiny bit of inside information that I'll risk sharing, at the expense of publicizing a confidence: The Buffalo News has not been the sole sponsor of this free concert series.

July 4, 1776...
I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure it will cost us to maintain this declaration, and support and defend these states.  Yet through all the gloom I see the rays of ravishing light and glory.  I can see that the end is worth all the means.  This is our day of deliverance.
