Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 19

Hullo friends.  No news, other than we're still standing...  Join us, and help keep us vertical?

Tuesday, 1/25/11 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Pat Georger, piano     Tim Clarke, trumpet     Wayne Moose, bass     your host, drum set
You'd think that after 12 years we would have exhausted every possible quartet permutation of local jazz talent.  But you'd be wrong.  I called Pat Georger to see (and hear) who he would like to surround himself with this week, and the result is yet another quartet new to Bobby McGee's.  Pat is among a handful of pianists that is on everyone's first call list, as are both trumpeter Tim Clarke and bassist Wayne Moose.  And tomorrow we'll combine talents and experience in the interest of a creative aural art form with an infectious feel.  We're still making every effort to keep our contribution vital and in the moment.  Stop in if you can.  We're in this together - at Bobby McGee's
i
n the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Jyl, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and a great hang.

Saturday, 1/29/2011 at Bobby McGee's     8:00 - 11:00
Mary Stahl and the Jim Calabrese Trio
Mary Stahl, vocals     Jim Calabrese, piano & arrangements     Dave Siegfried, bass     your correspondent, drum set
It was a veritable winter wonderland out there last Saturday, and Mary drew a crowd.  And that pretty much defines our mission:  give Mary a home, and the crowd will follow.  We don't know yet what February will bring, but we do have at least one more Saturday night with which to cast our musical intentions.  Can you make your date night plans now?  You get Mary, the Jim Calabrese Trio, the Great American Songbook, and a dance floor - a Manhattan night for a Buffalo price.

Sunday, 1/30/2011 at The Albright-Knox Art Gallery Auditorium     4:00 p.m.
The Charles Lloyd New Quartet
Charles Lloyd, saxophone     Jason Moran, piano     Reuban Rogers, bass     Eric Harland, drums
What recordings are on your desert island list?  Kind of Blue?  Bill Evans at Town Hall?  Crescent?  Forest Flower?  We can't hear Miles in concert anymore, nor Bill Evans or John Coltrane.  But the legendary Charles Lloyd is still with us, and soon to be up close and personal with a Buffalo audience.  The Charles Lloyd New Quartet will perform as part of the 2010–2011 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Sunday, January 30, at 4 p.m. in the Gallery’s Auditorium. The concert will be the first area performance
in over forty years
for saxophonist Lloyd, a true visionary jazz master.

Born in Memphis in 1938, Lloyd accompanied blues legends B. B. King and Howlin’ Wolf before playing in the bands of Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley.  He established himself as a leader in 1966 with a group that introduced pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette.  The band was a hit with jazz and rock audiences both, becoming the first jazz group to headline at the Fillmore West, and selling millions of records worldwide before disbanding in 1968.  Deemed an “international treasure” by Carlos Santana, Lloyd has been credited by many musicians with anticipating the World Music movement.  Since 1989 he has recorded a series of highly acclaimed albums featuring his charismatic, soaring-spirit sound for the ECM label.

Lloyd’s current New Quartet is considered to be one of his best ensemble ever.  The quartet's latest album, Mirror (ECM), was just named New Release of the Year in the JazzTimes Readers Poll, with both Lloyd and Moran cited as Artists of the Year.  Both Mirror and Moran’s latest album, Ten (Blue Note), have been named the top CDs of the year in the JazzTimes and Village Voice critics polls as well as by The New York Times.

The group’s appearance at the Albright-Knox comes just one day after their much-anticipated debut at New York’s Lincoln Center.  Art of Jazz Series Producer Bruce Eaton explains, “This concert is a rare opportunity to hear a band of extraordinary brilliance in one of the best venues for live jazz in North America.”

Ticket sales are already brisk, so don't count on getting a ticket at the door.  Get your tickets now.  Look for a Jeff Simon interview in the Buffalo News in the week leading up to this concert.  Once that interview hits the newsstands the remaining tickets will disappear.
A word to the wise...
Tickets are $25 for Albright-Knox Art Gallery Members and $29 for non-members, and can be purchased at the Gallery’s Admissions Desk or online at www.albrightknox.org/artofjazz.  The remaining performances this season include the Robert Glasper Trio on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 3 p.m. and Lewiston native Pete Malinverni with Lee Hudson and Eliot Gomez on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 8 p.m.

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 18

Hullo friends.  It's still looking good for saving Bobby McGee's.  I'm told that the new owner and the landlord are agreed in principle.  We think we're a few signatures away from a new regime.  Obviously, how new ownership affects us is still to be determined, but we're getting a good vibe.  And speaking of good vibes, Salty Walty offers his variety of talent and humor this week...

Tuesday, 1/18/11 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Sir Walter Jedermann - piano, vibraphone & vocals     Cameron Kayne - bass     your host - drum set
Yes, Sir Walter.  There's only one, and he brings his unique skill set to our Savvy & Informed Audience this Tuesday.  With Wally, expect the unexpected:  seldom heard standards, grooves and tempi that change and challenge from one tune to the next, heartfelt
lyrics from ballads to blues
, and the vibraphone too.  And that's just the music.  The self proclaimed Infant of Prague is also known for his antics, impressions, and energy to spare.  Please join us.  Help us convince the new ownership that our contribution can be both artistic and profitable ;)

Did you come out to hear Mary Saturday night?  Ooops.  Sorry about that.  Mike Milkie is still the owner, and he was concerned that the weather report was going to keep everybody home.  So we made an executive decision and cancelled.  But we're still on for the next two Saturdays - and beyond if the new owner so deems.
