Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 42

Hullo friends.  Here's this week's invitation, with a bit of a different slant...

Tuesday, 6/29 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Joey DeFrancesco, organ          Carmen Intorre, drum set
This Tuesday Bobby McGee's presents the planet's leading exponent of the Hammond B3 organ as we welcome Joey DeFrancesco back to his Niagara Frontier roots.  And to make it happen, I will step aside.  Buffalo's jazz drumming ambassador to New York and the world has just concluded a date in Toronto with Joey D, and he called to inquire about bringing Joey in.  So while I'll still be at my familiar Tuesday night haunt, I'll be at the bar, and give way to Carmen Intorre.  (Carmen did offer me the opportunity to sit-in.  "You've got to get next to that time".)

With apologies to our regulars, however, we have to ask for a humble cover charge.  The amazing thing is, in our 11 year history at Bobby McGee's presenting world-class artists on a weekly basis, this will be the first time that we've instituted a cover.  But at $10 per person, it's still a bargain.  An early arrival is advisable if you'd like a table near the stage.  Our thanks to Mike Kaupa, Chris Ziemba, and Buddy Fadale for graciously rescheduling their date.
Another bit of news, consistent with presenting Joey D, is an honor again bestowed by Buffalo Spree Magazine.  The Best of WNY 2010 issue is hitting the newsstands now, and we were recognized as the Best Weekly Band Gig.  Our thanks to Buffalo Spree for their continued commitment to excellence and all-things-Buffalo.

So our theme continues, and as always, you are invited.  Bobby McGee's in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Tina, Jyl, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and still a great hang.

Friday, 7/2 at Wegman's Sheridan    6:00 - 8:00
Dave Scott Trio
Dave Scott, guitar     Buddy Fadale, bass     your correspondent, drum set
Dave's trio returns to the balcony at Wegman's Sheridan again this week.  Maybe Dave, Buddy & I don't notice the growth, being as that it is incremental, but last week three different parties of listeners asked Dave for his business card, and another inquired if we had CD's for sale!

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 40

Hullo friends.  How's your rice crop coming along?  Mine is doing swimmingly, thank you.  Fear not.  The best summers on the planet take place right here in the Niagara Frontier.  The rain cleanses and restores.  And there are some worthy activities taking place both indoors and out this week.  To wit...

Tuesday, 6/15 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Dave Kayne, vibraphone     Tim Clarke, trumpet     Kenny Kuriscak, saxophone     Rick Strauss, guitar     Cameron Kayne, bass     your host, drum set

This band scares me.  Or more accurately, it's the material that's scary.  Contrary to the usual modus operandi for a Tuesday night offering, we actually had a rehearsal!  And that social event was courtesy of this week's featured father and son team.  I was reminded at said rehearsal that when you're accustomed to challenging yourself, that which is frightening to mere mortals becomes simply routine to the prodigious practicer.

Among the personal qualities that I have always admired about Dave Kayne is his work ethic - a work ethic that has filtered down to Cameron.  And Cameron, at 21, is an emerging bassist with a growing reputation.  He is already a known commodity to major artists in Toronto, New York and Europe.  In fact, we scheduled our hit for this Tuesday because Cam is leaving for a European tour next week.  So may we invite you to join us and challenge your own listening habits?

Music from Dave Holland, Steps Ahead, Mike Stern, Donny McCaslin, John Patitucci, Don Grolnick, Nat Adderley, Pat Metheny and Dave Kayne himself - not your average collection of blues and standards...  Bobby McGee's in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Tina, Jyl, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and still a great hang.

Friday, 6/18 at Wegman's Niagara Falls Blvd    6:00 - 8:00
Dave Scott Trio
Dave Scott, guitar     Buddy Fadale, bass     your correspondent, drum set
And speaking of musicians who continue to challenge themselves, Dave Scott is playing a return date at the Niagara Falls Blvd Wegman's this Friday.  Grab your $6.00 meal and your million dollar music fix.

Saturday, 6/19 at Templeton Terrace     6:00 - 10:00
Ben Baia & the Big City Horns
Ben Baia, vocals     Phil Sims, trombone & arrangements     Tim Clarke, trumpet     Kenny Kuriscak, saxophone     Michael T. Jones, keys     Jack Kulp, bass     yours truly, drum set
Templeton Terrace is the former Shanghai Red's.  But if you were there for Benny's debut with his Big City Horns two weeks ago, you already know that.  And you were also privy to the reception this band received from the dancing and listening audience.  Benny's another smart guy with a determined work ethic, and the Big City Horns is no thrown together thing.

Benny commissioned Phil Sims to write the charts with the idea of reprising the classic music of our youth:  Chicago, BS&T, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, the Temptations, Vehicle, Tower of Power.  And all on a waterfront patio with a spectacular view.

Tuesdays at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00

6/22 Matt Blanchard
6/29 Mike Kaupa
7/6 The Upstate Express
7/20 Chris Dempsey & Bruce Johnstone
8/3 Patty Flaherty & Craig Kastelnik

Fridays at Bobby McGee's 8:30 - 11:30
6/18 Swing & Blues Dance with the Patti Parks Band
6/25 Ernie Corallo & the Usual Suspects
7/23 The Donna Rose Singers
7/30 JJ Moscato & Blue Avenue

Saturdays at Bobby McGee's 8:00 - 11:00

Danny Hull's Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 39

Hullo friends.  It's Buffalo musician reunion time...

Tuesday, 6/8 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Joe Aromola, bass     Russ D'Alba, saxophone     Tommy Paladino, piano     your host, drum set
It's not often when a bass player is our featured artist.  Not that they're not worthy, mind you.  You can't do without a heartbeat.  But bassists of an upright nature have responsibilities that demand attention to the musical task at hand.  They advance the pulse, anchor the harmony, focus the intonation, and do so with a physically demanding instrument.  Self-aggrandizement is seldom their primary concern.  So this week we welcome home an old friend, and reunite a community of musicians of a certain age.  Joe Aromola was one of Buffalo's first-call bassists, and sorely missed when he re-located to New Orleans.  And this is Joe's first announced visit home since big hair was a big deal.  It'll be a love-fest, with some heart felt playing, and an all out jam session with Joe's old friends.  We invite you to witness the energy and share in the festivities, as we celebrate the friendships forged in the music.  Bobby McGee's in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Tina, Jyl, Magan, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and still a great hang.

Friday, 6/11 at Bobby McGee's     8:00 - 11:00
Gregg Juke & the Mighty No Stars
"Gregg Juke & the Mighty No Stars bring us along a journey of discovery that makes us glad we took the trip".  Now those are not my words, but the reflections of no less an authority than Jim Santella.  And that's a considerable endorsement.  Our R&B theme for Fridays continues, with an expanding roster of rockin' artists, and a newly reduced price-point for beer and well drinks at Bobby McGee's.  It's both a business decision and a thank you to our loyal and growing audience.  The management at our evolving music club has always recognized that with bigger crowds and a competitive pricing structure, the value of your entertainment dollar goes up.  It's a win-win.  Join us for some serious No Stars blues groove, and wash away the rigors of the work week at Bobby McGee's.

Saturday, 6/12 at Bobby McGee's     8:00 - 11:00
Mary Stahl and the Jim Calabrese Trio
Buffalo's First Lady of Song is featured every Saturday this month at Bobby McGee's.  How good is that?  Another win-win.  If you missed Mary last night, you can catch her this week.  And the week after.  And the week after...  She can cast a spell you know.  Irresistible and beloved in her home town, Mary is a talent worthy of national attention.  As part of our mission at Bobby McGee's to present singular and deserving artistry, we wanted to offer her public an ample opportunity to catch her during what is a busy time for everybody.  But be advised.  Once that spell is cast, you'll be making reservations for next week before the evening is out.  And with our new weekend drink specials, our theme is even more resonant:  A Manhattan night at a Buffalo price...
