Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 40

Hello friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 6/25 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Russ Carere, Sr - saxophone & flute     James Vincent Calabrese - piano     Buddy Fadale - bass     your host - drum set
The patriarch is the headliner this week, but we could easily bill the night as "An Evening With the Careres".  Russ has invited his good friends Jim Calabrese & Buddy Fadale to start things off, but word is that the larger Carere Clan is going to contribute as the show proceeds.  Proof that "the family that plays together, stays together"...  Can you join us?  An extended family of friends and listeners will make for an exceptional evening of energy, camaraderie, and an in-the-moment rendering of our indigenous musical art form.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Wednesday, 6/26 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:15 - 9:15

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 39

Hello friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 6/18 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
The Western New York Jazz Orchestra
Dave Kayne - piano, arranger, composer
Jim Bohm, Mark Filsinger, Joe Martino, Paul Wos - trumpets
Dave DeWitt, John Hasselback, Alan Jaenecke, Lon Gormley, Brian Poulan - trombones
Brian Tervo, Craig Incontro, Ken Kuriscak, Ken Witman, Chris Peracciny - saxes
Mike Moser - guitar
Cameron Kayne - bass
your host - drum set
The above, ladies & gentlemen, is a big band appearing this Tuesday at Milkie's Elmwood.  Need I say more?  OK, more...  The Western New York Jazz Orchestra is a living, playing  actualization of Dave Kayne's body of work.  Every composition, save one tune by trombonist Dave DeWitt, is from the fertile, musical mind of Dave Kayne.  You'll hear standards you know, all artistically arranged by Dave, and you'll hear music written and arranged only for this band.  If you want a table in the main room, you should plan to get there early.  This same band had an overflow crowd at the Iris in June of 2011, and that's a big room.  There's free parking in the bank lot on Elmwood.  And a dollar buys you a parking spot in a metered lot directly across the street from the club on West Utica.  We could not have planned a more exciting way to kick off the summer of 2013.  We hope to see you.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Friday, 6/21 at Wegman's Dick Rd     6:00 - 8:00
The Magpies
George Kane, guitar     Tim Clarke, trumpet     John Werick, bass     your correspondent, drum set
Dinner with The Magpies...  OK, so it's not the Roycroft.  But you can't get dinner for six bucks at the Roycroft either.  If you are one to haunt the busy intersection of George Urban & Dick Rd come dinnertime Friday, you know where to find us.

next Tuesday, 6/25 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Russ Carere, Sr - saxophone & flute     James Vincent Calabrese - piano     Buddy "don't call me John" Fadale - bass     your host - drum set

Upcoming at Milkie's Elmwood
Tuesday, 7/2 Vince Ercolomento
Tuesday, 7/9 The Upstate Express
Tuesday, 7/16 Larry Covelli
Tuesday, 7/23 Doug Stone
Tuesday, 7/30 Mike Costley

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 38

Hello friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 6/11 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Barbara Jean, vocals

Barbara Jean, vocals     Michael T. Jones, piano     Cameron Kayne, bass     your host, drum set
Small world...  Just last night I played an alumni gathering at SUNY Fredonia, and got talking to a 1963 music department graduate.  Ms. Harp (who plays trumpet - insert your own word-play joke here.) is from Jamestown, and she seemed to know every musician from her home town.  Knowing none of whom she mentioned, I asked "Do you know Barbara Jean?"  And Ms. Harp's eyes lit up.  "I love Barbara Jean!  She writes her own tunes you know.  Her husband Steve is a keyboard player..."  And if Ms. Harp didn't then get interrupted by another 1963 celebrant, I might still be hearing the praise and history of this week's featured guest.  The truth is, we love her too.  She's a sweet, genuine fellow musician with a cherry-eyed view of the world.  Her singing style is direct and unaffected, which is pretty much another way of describing Barbara Jean herself.  No bravado, no affectation, no insecure attempt to divert your attention from the song to her...  She's simply a treasure and a joy to know.  And yes - she writes her own material.  Clever lyrics, singable melodies (obviously), and a harmonic concept out the Great American Songbook.  If you've heard her at our venue, or at the Art Gallery, or at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, then you know what I mean.  If this will be your first time, you'll love her too.  Fellow musicians, bring your horn.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Wednesday, 6/12 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:15 - 9:15
Buffalo Brass Open Rehearsal
I think it's the location and the intimacy.  We're starting to get the open rehearsal audience that we didn't get at the Iris.  And when you put "intimacy", "big band", and "rehearsal" in the same sentence, it makes for an interesting experience for the listener.  If you get there early enough, you can secure a bar stool a mere two feet from the rhythm section.  Powerful.

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 37

Hello friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 6/4 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Russ D'Alba, saxophone     George Kane, guitar     Wayne Moose, bass     your host, drum set
A reprise!  Usually, when we invite Russ D'Alba to do our gig, he'll contemplate, and then come up with a rhythm section we haven't tried before.  Russ is a smart guy, and he likes to challenge himself.  But once you've spoiled yourself with the musicianship that guitarist George Kane and bassist Wayne Moose bring to the bandstand, it's hard to look away.  This quartet did a date together back in June, and Russell's call was to do it again.  So we honor his muse, and present Russ in his preferred company.  Join us if you can, bring your horn, sit-in, and help us keep the music in the air.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Hello friends.  You are invited.

Tuesday, 5/28 at Milkie's Elmwood
Janice Mitchell, vocals
   7:00 - 10:00
Janice Mitchell, vocals     Jim Beishline, piano     Buddy Fadale, bass     your host, drum set
Buffalo's Queen of Soul...  Actually, considering her vocal curriculum vitae, Janice Mitchell's claim to that title could extend far beyond her hometown.  But another well known singer is already globally so ordained, so we'll claim Janice for ourselves.  Luckily for us, our former Raelette, having travelled the world with the legendary Ray Charles, is happy at home singing to local audiences.  And that local audience this Tuesday is you, dear listener.  Our way of thanking you for your continuing support is this one special night with Janice.  Please join us.  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Friday, 5/31 at the Kenan Center     5:00 - 9:00
Tommy Paladino, piano     Buddy Fadale, bass     yours truly, drum set
Guitarist Ralph Fava traditionally opens the annual 100 American Craftsmen weekend at the Kenan Center, but a family obligation will interrupt our tradition this one time.  Veteran pianist Tommy Paladino has graciously agreed to sub for Ralph.

Danny Hull: Musically This Week Vol XV, No 35

Hello friends.  A busy week...

Tuesday, 5/21 at Milkie's Elmwood     7:00 - 10:00
Jason Juliano, saxophone     Matt Michaud, guitar     Cameron Kayne, bass     your host, drum set
Another new voice!  This week we welcome alto saxophonist Jason Juliano to his first featured appearance at our Tuesday tradition.  A student of both Dave Schiavone and Andy Weinzler, Jason is a recent graduate of the Ithaca College School of Music.  He's been haunting the scene, subbing on the Buffalo Brass rehearsals, and applying for teaching positions since earning his BA in Music Education.  In fact, he's a candidate for a prestigious position at the High School for the Arts in Boston, so we thought we'd get him on the gig before he's only back home on his semester breaks.  Join us if you can and hear the future of the music in real time...  Milkie's on Elmwood is at the intersection of West Utica & Elmwood Avenue.  882-5881

Wednesday, 5/22 at Williamsville East High School     7:30
John Pizzarelli, guitar & vocals
Act One:  John Pizzarelli, guitar & vocals     Lisa Hasselback, piano     Wayne Moose, bass     your correspondent, drum set
Act Two:  John Pizzarelli and the Williamsville East High School Jazz Orchestra
JOHN PIZZARELLI, called “hip with a wink” by Town & Country, “madly creative” by the Los Angeles Times and “the genial genius of the guitar” by The Toronto Star joins the Williamsville East Music Department as the featured Guest Artist for the Legends of Jazz Series.  Pizzarelli has appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “Conan” and “Live With Regis & Kelly.”  Regis Philbin says, “He is one of the most entertaining performers you'll ever see on a stage. He's perfection: a musician, a singer, a comedian.”  “For John Pizzarelli, work and play are pretty much the same thing.  He conveys a contagious enjoyment that transports you to a place where worries recede, and you can coast along with him to a jazz-pop heaven.  With his quiet, relaxed crooning and wisecracking humor, John Pizzarelli belongs to the cool of jazz, which he infuses with the heat of his good nature and his accelerated solos in which his voice and guitar synchronize.” – New York Times 4/12/13  In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, John has been a special guest on recordings for major performers such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Rosemary Clooney, Donna Summer, Roberta Flack, and Paul McCartney.  All tickets are reserved seating and cost $15, available starting Monday, April 22.  For more information call 716-626-8425 or email legendsofjazz@gmail.com.
Friday, 5/24 at Wegman's West Seneca     6:00 - 8:00
Dave Scott, guitar

Dave Scott, guitar     Buddy Fadale, bass     yours truly, drum set
Dave is doing his best to keep it pure.  These Wegman's gigs are getting harder and harder to get, and more bands are playing less jazz.  But it still remains a cool thing.  Play some music with friends, and do the grocery shopping all in one stop.  I figure if I spend twice what I make, I get my food for half price.  See you at the olive bar...
