Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 15

Hullo friends.  Life!  I'm being told that an offer has been tendered.  We now await the landlord's decision.  Our optimism remains cautious, obviously.  New ownership doesn't guarantee the music community that we still have a venue.  But I'm also told that there's hope for our continuing jazz experiment.  So we head into our holiday Tuesday with yet another new quintet offering...

Tuesday, 12/21
at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Tim Clarke, trumpet     Kenny Kuriscak, saxophones     Pat Georger, piano     Jim Colemon, bass     your host, drum set
Tim has lifted some classic Horace Silver charts for he & Kenny to explore - material from Horace-Scope and the like.  Horace Silver is one of the idiom's most prolific composers.  From simplicity (Song For My Father) to sophisticated (Peace), Horace owns the knack for creating the most lyrical of melodies.  Harmonize the melodies and support them harmonically, and you have a canon of jazz literature.  Tim is crafting a book of like material, and we're here to share his inspiration this week.  This will be a great night, both musically and socially.  We're confident of a good house, being holiday week and all.  But if I'm the next owner, I'll be there for certain.  If you'd like to both hear some Blue Note classics and help us convince the new ownership, please join us for some holiday cheer.

I took some heat for this prediction (from 9/26/2010):
"We may be looking at 5 & 11 this season, but our Bills will improve as the season unfolds."

We're within reach.  The Jets can be had.  (You read it here folks...)

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 14

Hullo friends.  Late Monday night.  Wiped out.  Can't think.  Can't write.  I'm even enjoying my second cold of the school year.  The children are so giving...  So here's a brief synopsis of this week's musical offerings...

Tuesday, 12/14
at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Tim Clarke, trumpet     Kenny Kuriscak, saxophones     Pat Georger, piano     Jim Colemon, bass     your host, drum set
Tim has lifted some classic Horace Silver charts for he & Kenny to explore - material from Horace-Scope and the like.  So if you like straight ahead and swinging, please brave the cold and help us keep our jazz contribution on life support.

Thursday, 12/16 at Cecelia's     6:00 -9:00
Michael T. Jones, piano     Greg Piontek, bass     yours truly, drum set
And speaking of straight ahead and swinging, Mike Jones eats 50's records for breakfast.  I played a gig with him last Friday and he's simply unbelievable - any tune, any key.  I still marvel at how lucky the Buffalo jazz community is to have had musicians like Mike & Tim Clarke actually re-locate here.  Must be the beef on weck...

Saturday, 12/18 at Bobby McGee's     8:00 - 11:00
Mary Stahl, vocals     Jim Calabrese, piano     Paul Zapalowski, bass     your correspondent, drum set
And on the subject of lucky...  Mary Stahl was born and raised here.  Guess we should be thanking some ancestral whim...  This Saturday opens the one musically legal week to render Christmas music to our Bobby McGee's audience.  Join us for some holiday cheer?

Tuesdays at Bobby McGee's
12/28 Mike Kaupa

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 13

Hullo friends.  To say that we have life at Bobby McGee's would be an exaggeration, but the owner did tell me last week that it looks like we'll be there "awhile".  It seems that the landlord agrees that despite the issues with the exorbitant monthly rent, it is best for all parties that we stay open.  So we can look to the new year and see what that future brings. In the meantime, we this week present the most infectious of rhythmists...

Tuesday, 12/7

at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Wendell Rivera's Latin Jazz Ensemble
Wendell Rivera, Latin Percussion & vocals     Nelson Rivera, tenor saxophone     Krista Seddon, piano     John Curry, bass          your host, drum set
When it comes to time and feel, there is no one like Wendell.  Have you ever noticed that salsa music serves both extremes of tempo and pulse?  The beat has momentum.  That's why it feels so good.  But when it comes to a ballad, time seems to stop - at least for this gringo.  In fact I once told Wendell that he was the only musician in Buffalo who doesn't rush - an exaggeration to be sure, but you get my point.  So join us this week.  It's only cold from the house to the car, and at the club you can park centimeters from the front door.
