Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 27

Hullo friends.  Late Monday night...  Did you know that even after a shower drywall dust doesn't wash off?  You don't want to know what I did today.  Needless to say, tomorrow night will be a lot more fun...

Tuesday, 3/22 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
The Kipler Brothers
Mickey Kipler, tenor saxophone     Jimmy Kipler, guitar     Paul Zap, bass     your host, drum set

I don't have any photos of the Kipler Brothers.  But if you've seen one you've seen them both.  In fact, even Paul Zap kind of looks like Mickey & Jimmy.  OK, no he doesn't.  I'm just tired.  (There's a proven study about how drywall dust can affect one's thinking.)  But I digress...  You likely don't need a photo of the Kips anyway.  If you've heard any music in Buffalo since the 50's, you know they are Buffalo legends.  In fact, here's a true story:  Stanley Turrentine is Mickey's saxophone hero.  Back in the 70's, Stanley was appearing at the Revilot.  Mickey was there and was invited to sit-in.  So Stanley retired to the bar and Mickey did his thing, whereupon after the set Stanley's drummer said to Mickey "You sound more like Stanley than Stanley!"  And Jimmy?  He doesn't sound like Stanley, but he is a brilliant guitarist.  (Which you knew anyway...)  So here's you're chance to catch up with the Kips, hear their growth, and have some laughs with the most beloved twins in Buffalo's storied musical history.  Still at Bobby McGee's - in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Jyl, Jennifer, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and a great hang.

Friday, 3/25 at Wegman's Sheridan     6:00 - 8:00
Dave Scott, guitar     Buddy Fadale, bass     yours truly, drum set
Have you ever indulged yourself at the Wegman's olive bar?  Expensive at $7.49 a pound, but you could make a meal out of 'em...  And while you're there Friday, we will be too.  And just as tasty...

next Tuesday, 3/29 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 26

Tuesday, 3/15 at Bobby McGee’s         7:00 – 10:00

Laurie O’Bordonaro, vocals     Michael T. Jones, piano     Sabu O’Adeyola, bass     Daniel Patrick O’Hull, drum set
The goal of a mature soloist is to tell his story melodically, to render her improvisation lyrically, to sing through the instrument.  And we do have a lyrical soloist this week in Michael T. Jones.  But we also have a singer.  But not just any singer…  We have a musician who sings.  True to herself and to her art, Laurie is joyful, generous, and loyal.  And with a hard bop sense of swing, she reveals herself in every heartfelt lyric.  Please join us to celebrate your inner Irish this Tuesday at Bobby McGee’s.  Find us in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Maple & Sweet Home Roads.  Jyl, Jennifer, steady Billy & quiet Mike – good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and a great hang.

Sunday, 1/30/2011 at The Albright-Knox Art Gallery Auditorium     3:00 p.m.

The Robert Glasper Trio
Robert Glasper, piano     Derrock Hodge, bass     Mark Colenberg, drums

The highly-acclaimed Robert Glasper Trio will make their first area appearance as part of the 2010–2011 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Sunday, March 20, at 3 pm in the Gallery’s Auditorium.  The concert will be preceeded at  2 pm with a pre-concert conversation “The Future Is Now: Where Is Jazz Headed?” with series producer Bruce Eaton.
With a sound all his own, Blue Note recording artist and Grammy nominee Robert Glasper is truly a jazz pianist for the twenty-first century, successfully blending the free-flow of a classic trio with time-bending hip-hop rhythms.  While drawing frequent comparisons to Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, and a ”21st century incarnation of Thelonious Monk” (Financial Times UK) for his work as a leader and as a sideman with Terence Blanchard and Christian McBride, Glasper has collaborated extensively with hip-hop and neo-soul icons like The Roots, J Dilla, Maxwell, Q-Tip, and Kanye West.  The result is music that is “direct, forceful, inventive, and accessible without pandering” (New York).  Hailing a recent performance Britain’s Jazzwise magazine recounted, “Glasper’s unfurling way with melody and improvisational prowess set a mesmerising atmosphere…the band responding to a rapt audience with incredible levels of interactivity and dynamic drama.”
Tickets are $25 for Albright-Knox Art Gallery Members and $29 for non-members, and can be purchased at the Gallery’s Admissions Desk or online at www.albrightknox.org/artofjazz.  The remaining performance this season is the Pete Malinverni Trio with Lee Hudson and Elliot Zigmund on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 8:00.

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 25

Hullo friends.  Make your plans for this special night...

Tuesday, 3/8 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
DownloadedFile.jpeg
Clay Jenkins, trumpet     Chris Ziemba, piano     Jeff Campbell, bass     your host, drum set
I was thinking I could open this week's promo by referring to Clay as being "bi-coastal".  While fulfilling his teaching responsibilities at the esteemed Eastman School, he somehow manages to criss-cross the country playing gigs and recording.  It could be with Joe La Barbera in LA, or with our friend Pete Malinverni in New York.  But "bi-coastal", though seemingly accurate, is incomplete.  "Global" is more like it.  Just this past fall Clay spent 10 days in New Zealand performing the Miles Davis/Gil Evans treatment of "Porgy and Bess."  There are not too many endurance tests for a trumpet player more difficult than this late-1950's masterwork.  To quote an article in both a Rochester & a Texas newspaper (where he also appeared only last month) Clay said, "I really enjoy it.  It wasn't written to play live so it's really challenging.  You've got to be in shape to do those things because it's like an hour-long concerto.  It's on your mouth constantly the last 20 minutes.  There are no breaks.  If you get tired you're sunk."  New Zealand?  New York?  LA with Joe La Barbera?  Texas?  Bobby McGee's?  If I had a brain in my head I'd be nervous.  But we've done this before.  Clay has always been a gracious guest, and he comes to play.  And that's a testament to not only his world-class musicianship, but to his humanity.  No matter the venue, world-stage or Bobby McGee's, Clay brings his good nature and his musical intent to bear.  So don't miss the chance to hear another world renown artist at our continuing jazz experiment.  Bobby McGee's - in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Jyl, Jennifer, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and a great hang.

and we're cutting funding for education...
My grandfather used to talk all the time about the importance of empowering youth as change agents in society.  Youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also the leaders of today.  As FDR once said, "we cannot always prepare the future for our youth, but we can prepare our youth for the future."
