Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 22

Hullo friends.  Your valentine's present...

Tuesday, 2/15 at Bobby McGee's     7:00 - 10:00
Bobby Militello, saxophone, flute & vocals     Bobby Jones, piano     Jim Colemon, bass     your host, drum set
Buffalo's jazz ambassador to the world returns to Bobby McGee's this week.  We are grateful and privileged.  Because Bobby comes to play.  He is and always has been, the real deal.  He's not going to give less than when he's on the international stage with Dave Brubeck.  He won't hold back because he's at a restaurant that isn't his own.  He'll give every ounce of energy to each moment.  He'll sing.  He'll play flute.  He'll sing and play flute at the same time!  He doesn't pretend that he's better than everyone else, despite the long list of musical luminaries he has shared the bandstand with.  He's one of us, and he'll bare his musical soul this very week.  And not only do we get Bobby Militello, we get the singular Bobby Jones - one of the greatest musicians on the planet.  And don't think it's not so just because Jones lives here.  Bobby Jones is a prodigy.  And a gentleman.  He takes gigs with we mere mortals.  He's grounded.  He's genuine.  And he too, is one of us.  Jim Colemon?  I love Colemon.  He's on my short list.  He's yet another Niagara Frontier guy who knows where he's from.  His beat is fat.  His sound is round, and he plays with a fearless confidence - which is why he's Militello's first call.  I repeat - I am so very privileged.  And now to our situation...  Our venue is in transition.  New ownership is imminent.  Changes are already taking place.  Will we survive?  Obviously, that depends on whether we can generate enough income to prove our value and our worth.  We've made our contribution to the jazz community.  And until our move to the new venue, the jazz community supported us.  Maybe with some new energy, a freshened look, and some outreach, we can get some help and keep the music in the air.  But for one week, we're unconcerned.  The weather is warming, and Bobby Militello will pack the house.  Get there early.

  1. Dan,

A spectacular night with Bobby Militello! And, the superb talents of Bobby Jones made for a special night of jazz music at its' highest levels. Bobby Militello's flute playing was flawless and the trading fours sounded great. Jim Coleman was fabulous. Thanks for putting together a great show.
