Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 18

Hullo friends.  It's still looking good for saving Bobby McGee's.  I'm told that the new owner and the landlord are agreed in principle.  We think we're a few signatures away from a new regime.  Obviously, how new ownership affects us is still to be determined, but we're getting a good vibe.  And speaking of good vibes, Salty Walty offers his variety of talent and humor this week...

Did you come out to hear Mary Saturday night?  Ooops.  Sorry about that.  Mike Milkie is still the owner, and he was concerned that the weather report was going to keep everybody home.  So we made an executive decision and cancelled.  But we're still on for the next two Saturdays - and beyond if the new owner so deems.

The Charles Lloyd New Quartet

What recordings are on your desert island list?  Kind of Blue?  Bill Evans at Town Hall?  Crescent?  Forest Flower?  We can't hear Miles in concert anymore, nor Bill Evans or John Coltrane.  But the legendary Charles Lloyd is still with us, and soon to be up close and personal with a Buffalo audience.  The Charles Lloyd New Quartet will perform as part of the 2010–2011 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Sunday, January 30, at 4 p.m. in the Gallery’s Auditorium. The concert will be the first area performance 
in over forty years 
for saxophonist Lloyd, a true visionary jazz master.

Born in Memphis in 1938, Lloyd accompanied blues legends B. B. King and Howlin’ Wolf before playing in the bands of Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley.  He established himself as a leader in 1966 with a group that introduced pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette.  The band was a hit with jazz and rock audiences both, becoming the first jazz group to headline at the Fillmore West, and selling millions of records worldwide before disbanding in 1968.  Deemed an “international treasure” by Carlos Santana, Lloyd has been credited by many musicians with anticipating the World Music movement.  Since 1989 he has recorded a series of highly acclaimed albums featuring his charismatic, soaring-spirit sound for the ECM label.
 
Lloyd’s current New Quartet is considered to be one of his best ensemble ever.  The quartet's latest album, Mirror (ECM), was just named New Release of the Year in the JazzTimes Readers Poll, with both Lloyd and Moran cited as Artists of the Year.  Both Mirror and Moran’s latest album, Ten (Blue Note), have been named the top CDs of the year in the JazzTimes and Village Voice critics polls as well as by The New York Times.  
 
The group’s appearance at the Albright-Knox comes just one day after their much-anticipated debut at New York’s Lincoln Center.  Art of Jazz Series Producer Bruce Eaton explains, “This concert is a rare opportunity to hear a band of extraordinary brilliance in one of the best venues for live jazz in North America.”
 
Ticket sales are already brisk, so don't count on getting a ticket at the door.  Get your tickets now.  Look for a Jeff Simon interview in the Buffalo News in the week leading up to this concert.  Once that interview hits the newsstands the remaining tickets will disappear.

Tickets are $25 for Albright-Knox Art Gallery Members and $29 for non-members, and can be purchased at the Gallery’s Admissions Desk or online at www.albrightknox.org/artofjazz.  The remaining performances this season include the Robert Glasper Trio on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 3 p.m. and Lewiston native Pete Malinverni with Lee Hudson and Eliot Gomez on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 8 p.m.

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 17

Hullo friends.  We're looking good.  If 2011 responds to the promise, we're in for an exciting year.  As of this writing we have nothing signed, but the current and next owners do have a gentlemen's agreement, and there are some big plans.  A sports bar, a concert series in a remodeled banquet room, and the continuation of our Tuesday night jazz experiment are all in the discussion.  For now we're only booked through this month, but we may know more by Tuesday.  Can I update you then?

It's Kenny's Fault

This whole thing isn't entirely Kenny's fault.  Dave Kayne bought into it.  The two of them conspired to craft a quintet that features some of the most challenging music that four school band directors and college student could possibly deal with.  And so what if I'm the only one whining about it!  This stuff is hard!  Salsa in 5/4?  Whoever heard of such a thing?  Music is supposed to be fun!  And have you heard any of that Dave Holland material?  Of course you haven't.  Dave Kayne and Kenny Kuriscak are the only jazz enthusiasts who buy those recordings!  So why not help me here.  Stop in Tuesday night and talk some sense into these guys.  Explain to them that Horace Silver is where it's at.  Satin Doll and The Girl From Ipanema never hurt anybody...
