Danny Hull Newsletter
IMPORTANT NEWS!
Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 3

Hullo friends.  Watching the Bills game whilst writing this update...  I don't always agree with Jerry Sullivan, but he's my first read on the sports page.  He called the move to Fitzpatrick desperate.  I think
Trent Edwards has a place in the NFL, but more likely as a career back-up.  Ryan Fitzpatrick has a feel for the game, is less deliberate than Edwards, and like a confident musician, comes to play.  We may be looking at 5 & 11 this season, but our Bills will improve as the season unfolds.

So what's happening?  The rumor mill is working overtime.  But that's out of sincere concern and interest in the fate of our twelve year jazz experiment.  Here are the facts:  At the close of business last Tuesday, we had a week to go.  The new Bobby McGee's was essentially a failure.  We simply did not generate enough business to cover the overhead and turn even a humble profit.  With Ernie Krivda and Bobby Jones we were enjoying our penultimate performance in what has been a surprising run, and one of growth and opportunity for this fortunate local musician.

So while considering how to compose a respectful epitaph and thank you to Mike Milkie, our audience, and the musicians, the phone rings.  Life.  It seems that the reports of our demise have been premature!  Last week Mike had a meeting with an interested party who wants to come in and take over.  Will the music policy be saved under new ownership?  Hard to say.  I've had no conversation with anyone but Mike, but he says it looks good for a deal.

So here's where we're at:  We're on for this week with the multi-talented Joe Rozler, the incomparable Dave Schiavone, and the singular Buddy Fadale.  If we don't get a deal, we're done after this Tuesday.  If we do get a deal AND the new ownership wants to continue the music policy, there will likely be a Tuesday interruption.  Here's what I'm thinking:  If I'm the new interested party, I'll be there Tuesday night to survey the possibilities.  And being as that this is our ONLY opportunity to make an impression, I need you there.  If we're done, we're done, and thank you.  And if that's the case, this weekly treatise is done as well, until we find another venue.  That brings you up to speed.  You know what the stakes are.  See you Tuesday?

Tuesday, 9/28 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Joe Rozler - piano, guitar & vocals     Dave Schiavone - saxophones & flute     Buddy Fadale - bass     your host - drum set

Friday, 10/1 at Wegman's Sheridan     6:00 - 8:00
Dave Scott, guitar     Buddy Fadale, bass     yours truly, drum set
In speaking with Dave Scott about the Bobby McGee's situation, Dave mused that "it's a good thing for the Wegman's gigs."  And though one does not replace the other, I see his point.  The curious thing is that the Wegman's venues have it's audiences.  This week we're at the Sheridan Drive store in Williamsville.  Stop in.  By week's end I'll likely have an update on that other gig ;)

upcoming at Bobby McGee's?

Whatever awaits us...

It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new.  But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful.  There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XIII, No 1

Hullo friends.  Hope you see this in time to make your Tuesday plans...

Tuesday, 9/14 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Clay Jenkins, trumpet     Chris Ziemba, piano     Jeff Campbell
, bass     your host, drum set
...because you don't want to miss one of the most unique and individual trumpet players on this round planet.  Why the worn out "unique and individual" qualifiers?  Because when I hear Clay, I can't hear his influences.  We all know musicians who spend their formative years emulating their idols.  And there's value in that.  What's the cliche?  "Good musicians borrow.  Great musicians steal."  But all skills being equal, a great musician is recognized as such by the strength of his or her individuality.  And Clay Jenkins is the real deal - a mature artist with a singular musical voice.  For this date at Bobby McGee's, Clay has invited his friend and colleague on the Eastman faculty, bassist Jeff Campbell, and another Eastman protege in pianist Chris Ziemba.  Not bad company.  And you are invited too.  Hear swinging American music steeped in tradition, and set free by a creative musical spirit.  Still at
Bobby McGee's, now

Hullo friends.  Only one night this week, but a good one...

George Caldwell CD Release Party

George Caldwell, piano     Tim Clarke, trumpet     Doug Stone, tenor saxophone     Sabu Adeyola, bass     your host, drum set
George Overall Caldwell is celebrating the release of Mocus, his first recording as a leader, and Bobby McGee's is the privileged venue.  CD Release parties are always a blast, but when you consider all the friends that George has made since he moved to Buffalo to wed the lovely and esteemed Constance McEwen, this gathering will be one for the books.  We'll play the blues, we'll play some standards, and we'll certainly render some of the very arrangements that George features on his disc.  So come for the music, come for the hang, and celebrate with us the recorded document of this exceptional life force and his inspiring musicianship.  Bobby McGee's - in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Tina, Jyl, Jessica, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and a great hang.

Labor Day 2010...
Labor Day differs in every essential from other holidays of the year in any country.  All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflict and battles of man’s prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another.  Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race or nation.
