Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 48

Hullo friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 8/10 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Mike Kaupa, trumpet     Chris Ziemba, piano     Buddy Fadale, bass     your host, drum set
A dear friend is back home for a few weeks from his new digs in LA.  "Who's on Tuesday?"  "Mike Kaupa".  "Beautiful!  I'll be there."  No matter how far removed, it's hard to forget Mike.  All of the requirements are there:  facility, range, tone.  But what makes Mike so unique is his concept, and the fact that every note leaves his horn dripping with soul.  We're all trying to tell a story.  The difference lies in how one tells it.  And that is what distinguishes Mike.  No matter whether we're playing Lush Life or a B flat blues, the storytelling is both soulful and the embodiment of nuance.  And if that's not enough, consider how Mike has surrounded himself.  When I listen to Chris Ziemba, I hear the passion and commitment of Bill Evans.  And when I hear Buddy Fadale, I hear Buddy, and a little bit of Scott LaFaro.  With that 200 year old upright, that growl, and that fearless momentum on every quarter note, Buddy stands alone.  So again I am privileged to be in the musical and personal company of these distinguished musicians.  And you, dear listener, are invited to join us.

Bobby McGee's,

i

Our first rehearsal is tomorrow, so I can't tell you much other than what you see on the Artpark web site.  Starring Sally Struthers, the show is a comedy set in 1955 featuring the music of Elvis and a story-line reminiscent of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.  Should be fun...

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 44

Hullo friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 7/13 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Laurie Bordonaro, vocals     Michael T. Jones, piano     Sabu Adeyola, bass     your host, drum set
She's back!  The Joyful One returns.  And this time with new material.  Though she never stops studying, Laurie is excitedly preparing for her return to the Art Gallery stage.  The finale for the Summer Sundays series at the Albright Knox, Laurie is the featured vocalist with the Michael T. Jones Quartet.  So new material is definitely in order.  And this week we offer the indoor preview for said outdoor performance.  Laurie is beloved, so we're expecting a strong house.  And while the air conditioning on the steps of the Art Gallery is whimsical, it's guaranteed at Bobby McGee's.  Please join us as we present the hardest swinging singer this side of Akron.  ...i

Saturday, 7/17 at Templeton Terrace     6:00 - 10:00
Ben Baia & the Big City Horns
Ben Baia, vocals Phil Sims, trombone & arrangements     Tim Clarke, trumpet     Kenny Kuriscak, sax     Pat Georger, keys     Cameron Kayne, bass     yours truly, drum set
Yikes!  Were you at the Taste of Buffalo for Benny's big stage debut?  Needless to say, the crowd responded with the same enthusiasm that we get at all of the Templeton Terrace gigs, except in numbers of 1,000 or more.  Dancers and listeners love Benny, they love the horn section, and they love the music of our youth:  Chicago, BS&T, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, the Ides of March, Al Green, The Four Tops, Steve Winwood, even The Spiral Staircase!  This band is killing it.  And on the patio, the setting at the former Shanghai Reds is a literal summer sensation.  Come join us for a spectacular night on the waterfront.

Danny Hull Newsletter: Musically This Week Vol XII, No 43

Hullo friends.  This week...

Tuesday, 7/6 at Bobby McGee's 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Ron Corsaro & the Upstate Express

Ron Corsaro, piano & arrangements     Dick Griffo & Kenny Kuriscak, saxophones     Tim Clarke, trumpet     John Hasselback, trombone     Dave Siegfried, bass     your host, drum set

Ronnie has one of the sweetest summer gigs on the Niagara Frontier, and this Tuesday we celebrate an indoor preview to his outdoor concert series.  The Upstate Express opens the 2010 season at the Hennepin Park Gazebo this Thursday, and for those of you who can't make the drive to Lewiston, we bring the band to you.  Ronnie somehow manages to coax a big band sound out of a septet by way of his crafty arranging skills.  And when said arrangements are rendered by the above referenced horn section, the music simply sparkles and comes  to life.
So please join us in air conditioned comfort.

Bobby McGee's in the Maple Ridge Plaza, Sweet Home & Maple Roads.  Tina, Jyl, steady Billy & quiet Mike - good music, good food, good people, chilled spirits, and still a great hang.

Friday,
7/9 at the Lion's Pavilion in Olcott's Krull Park    6:30 - 8:30

Sophisticated Swing
Jessica Condes, vocals     Jim Sansone, trumpet & vocals     Gary Dieboldt, keys & vocals     yours truly, drum set
There's air conditioning in Krull Park too, of the natural variety.  But with the music in the air and the breeze off Lake Ontario, what's not to like?  Especially on a gorgeous friday evening...  Sophisticated Swing takes their muse from Lambert, Hendricks & Ross and performs vocal harmonies in the storied swing tradition.  They'll steal your heart with both their musicianship and the joy with which they sing and play.

Saturday, 7/10 at Niagara Square     3:00 - 4:00
Ben Baia & the Big City Horns
Benny's band plays the coveted 3:00 p.m. time slot at Niagara Square for the Taste of Buffalo celebration.  Let us know you're out there...

Saturday, 7/10 at Bobby McGee's 8:00 - 11:00
Janice Mitchell, vocals     Jim Beishline, piano     Buddy Fadale, bass     yours truly, drum set
Buffalo's Queen of Soul takes the stage at Bobby McGee's this Saturday night.  Jim Beishline provides the compliment to

Janice Mitchell's stirring and soulful vocals

by way of his carefully crafted arrangements.  You can hear Jim & Janice in any variety of venues this summer, but ours is the only one where the piano is of the acoustic and grand variety, thanks to the generous support of our friends at Hamburg Music.
